About me
Dave MacKenzie is the owner and general manager of Hortech, Inc. (Hortech.com), which he co-founded in 1983. Hortech is a leading Midwestern producer of native and adapted perennials, ground covers, grasses, vines and ferns that are grown in an Earth Friendly manner (2026 marks 32 years of bio-control based cultural practices). Dave is an author, photographer and product developer—focusing on horticulturally sound green infrastructure products such as Hortech’s LiveRoof green roof system (LiveRoof.com) and LiveWall planted wall system (LiveWall.com).
Dave has also been breeding plants for the last 15 years, and is just beginning to introduce his selections. With a focus on native and adapted species, Dave works with such popular genera as Allium, Buddleia, Diervilla, Liriope, Nepeta, Oregano, Sedum, Andropogon, Panicum and Schizachyrium.
